The top four teams have been chosen and the two semifinal games are set. Alabama will play Notre Dame and Clemson faces Ohio State for a right to play for the national championship.

College Football Playoff semifinals: What Vegas thinks

Vegas just doesn’t think much of Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish won their first 10 games — including against then top-ranked Clemson in college football’s biggest upset of the year — but laid an egg in the ACC Championship. Clemson beat ND by 24 points in the rematch and made a statement by piling up over 500 yards of offense.

The odds-makers foresee a similar turn of events when the Irish meet Alabama. The Crimson Tide have a more productive offense than Clemson, ranking third in FBS in scoring this season. Alabama demolished Notre Dame in their last meeting, a 42-13 victory in the 2012 National Championship.

Moreover, ND has been outscored by 144 points in BCS/New Year’s bowls since 1998. Two of those losses were against Ohio State (2005, 2015) and one was to Clemson (2018). The latter game was a 30-3 loss that bounced the Irish out of the College Football Playoff.

We’ve heard it all year: Ohio State hasn’t played enough games. Whether that makes them fresh or unprepared remains to be seen. Vegas is siding more with the latter option in this game.

The Buckeyes haven’t fared well against Clemson in the College Football Playoff recently. In 2016, the Tigers blanked Ohio State, 31-0. Last year, OSU lost 29-23 on a last-second interception.

Ohio State didn’t really impress in beating Northwestern for the Big Ten championship. There were some play-calling issues and Justin Fields didn’t play well. Conversely, Trevor Lawrence is coming off a 300 yard passing game and Clemson piled up over 200 rushing yards against a good ND defense.
